The term “Introvertism” comes from the root word introvert.

Assuming anyone reading this has an idea of what “introvert” refers to, Introvertism , according to the American Heritage Dictionary, is the act of introverting or the state of being introverted.

Introvertism is the state of being an introvert, claiming certain introverted traits.

Introvertism is a “recent coinage” according to Merriam-Webster, a word that has been around since the 50s.

Its first known use was during 1956 as another term for introversion, which means drawing energy from being alone, according to Dictionary.com.

In modern times however it became a term to describe some people’s tendency to be naturally inclined towards solitary activities, reflect deeply, and have limited social contact.

Introvertism is not an official word. That doesn’t mean it should be written off completely though. As of right now, there isn’t any evidence supporting why it should or shouldn’t be considered an actual word. Until its use becomes more popular

So, the answer would be yes, it’s a word! It’s real…but it’s not one you hear every day.

The Use of The Term Introvertedness

Introvertedness has been known to be a more proper term when referring to introverted tendencies.

The term ‘introvertedness’ appears to be more frequently used than introvertism, which makes sense because it is the proper word.

It’s still not too often that you see other alternatives like introvertism or introvertive.

Here’s what Merriam-Webster has to say about the word; “the quality or state of being introverted: as a: behavior marked by or reflecting concentration of attention on one’s own mental processes b: withdrawal from social contact c: intense myopia d: unwillingness to travel far.”

The most commonly used term to describe one’s introverted tendencies is introversion.
